Dawe BigY testing

Yes, we are still an active project, just having too much fun finding/exploring matches to update this blog very often.
Those belonging to the project have access to the FamilyTreeDNA Dawe project Activity log, which is private to project members only.

Keep an eye on this block of The Big Tree under R-P312/S116 > Z40481 > ZZ11 > DF27/S250 > ZZ12 > BY653 

It contains the first of the DAWE project BigY results - those for the Lamerton, Devon branch.
With the current sale on, we've also upgraded a 4th cousin from the same line, so should progress down towards present day a little further.

Once FamilyTreeDNA have finished their upgrade to their haplogroup tree and the necessary files are available (BAM files) again, results will also be uploaded to yFull.com, where we should be under this R-BY653 sub-branch.

atDNA group

While we wait for more yDNA candidates and matches, those of you also exploring autosomal DNA (atDNA) to see what that may add to our overall knowledge of DAW(E) families may be interested in two updates:

On my (Lorna's) DAWE family page there's a updated chromosome map of some of the DNA segments that have been identified as having been inherited by the participants from either Isaac DAWE or his wife Sarah SMITH, who married in 1796 at Tavistock, Devon.
The 2014 version is still there for comparison.

It is already out of date as another descendant of William Smith DAWE and Mary WAY has popped up on GEDMatch, having tested at Ancestry


Over on DNASurnames, the DAWE DNA results page has an atDNA section added.
Included on that page is the current Dawe/Smith descendants chromosome map, but also a chart showing the predicted generations between matches along with the actual generations.
The chart also highlights the randomness of atDNA inheritance by showing which cousins do NOT have a detectable match (over 10cMs).
There is also a segment traceability diagram, copy below, showing how many connections between tested participants exist - thanks to the wonderful tools on GEDMatch. This one comes from the Multiple Kit Analysis - key for the diagram is on the above linked page.

Tweaks/sale/privacy settings

A few tweaks have been made to the Summary Project pages on the WorldFamiliesNetwork.

In doing so it was noticed that the default grid embedded on the result page direct from FamilyTreeDNA was not showing all of the project results.

The tweaks:

• formatting of some pedigrees that seem to have gone awol fixed
• Skeleton pedigrees added for DAWE families in Lanreath, Cornwall and Snettisham, Norfolk 

With the FamilyTreeDNA sale on until the end of December, this is a great time to find representatives for new direct male line DAWE families to take at least Y-DNA37 (but preferably Y-DNA67) tests, and for anyone with a DAWE ancestor to try FamilyFinder.

Check out your MyGroups

Those of you belonging to the DAW(E) Surname dna project may have noticed there's a new facility  available on FamilyTree DNA when you log in - MyGroups.

Why not check out the activity feed for the group and contribute something about your DAW(E) ancestry and either what you are trying to prove from DNA, or have already proven?

Activity feed posts are private to members of the project only.

At the top of your FTDNA page you will see a globe, currently to the left of your name, upgrade message etc.
The little globe that may have a red circle with numbers in it - that's the number of unread posts since you last visited.
Clicking on Dawe in your project list will take you to the new project pages, which includes a link to the Activity Feed.
At the moment there are still daily coupon codes being posted for varying $$ off new orders.
The clutter of the $10 off ones has been reduced by moving those to the public News page, leaving  the more serious $$ off ones for members only.

Autosomal DNA for DAW(E)

The males need not be the only ones having dna fun for DAWE.

Although yDNA is the quickest and surest way of proving direct male lineages, it is restricted to just the direct male line descendants.
Autosomal DNA is far more inclusive in that anyone with a DAWE ancestor may contain segments of DAWE DNA in their genes.
Unfortunately the inheritance process is a little more random, and the lottery of life may mean it is no longer detectable, but you wont know until you try!

Autosomal results have not yet been included on the DAWE DNA project supplementary pages, but we are having a degree of success identifying segments of dna that can be attributed to DAWE ancestors from Devon.

To join in with the multi-dimensional jigsaw involved in identifying the shared segments of dna and the shared ancestor responsible for passing on that bit of dna down the generations, do consider autosomal dna testing - FamilyTree DNA's FamilyFinder for preference as you can then join the DAWE DNA project there, but if you have tested at 23andme or ancestry and have DAWE ancestry, why not consider transferring to FamilyTree DNA?

Devon DAWE

Our sole representative of the family of miller Isaac and Sarah (SMITH) DAWE of Lamerton has upgraded to 67 markers.
The results show he has no matches at 67 markers at all in the FTDNA database.
Back at 37 markers he only had one match, and that at a genetic distance (GD) of 4, to a person claiming descent from a HARRIS of Nova Scotia.

There must be others claiming descent from DAW(E) families of Devon interested to see if they connect?

Results from Devon

Preliminary results are beginning to arrive for a representative of the Devon DAWE family of the miller Isaac DAWE of Lumburn.
Another in the growing group of R-M269 (R1b1a2).
The Summary DNA pages have been updated, including the remainder of results for the representative of the family of John & Sophia DAWE of St Blazey, Cornwall.

Cornish DAWE(S) results

The Summary Result page has been updated to include the preliminary Y-DNA results from a Cornish line.
Currently looks to be a new lineage rather than a match to any in the project.
Haplogroup not yet known.
In addition, the patriarch page has been rearranged to group pedigrees by haplogroup, and colour code them accordingly.

No, the lack of posts doesn't indicate a lack of activity, far from it.
Just no time to update the diary.
Remember to keep an eye on the general DNA notices on the DNA Surnames diary.

FamilyTree DNA's annual sale is over and done with and although we didn't advance our knowledge of DAW(E) Y-DNA to the best of my current knowledge, we do now have a prospect lined up that may do so.
Fingers crossed.

A lot of my time these days goes onto exploring autosomal matches (FamilyTree DNA's FamilyFinder test, or 23andme or ancestry's autosomal test).
I am intrigued to notice a match to a lady with Newfoundland DAWs in her tree.
We've not yet explored the connection further as there's only so many hours in a day.

If you do want to venture forth into autosomal DNA testing, ancestry is currently offering tests at a discount (they were down to $79US but now seem to be $89US). Remember to  transfer your results to FamilyTree DNA, and upload your raw data to GedMatch, to make the most of your investment, fishing in as many ponds as possible to find your matches.

30th: Patriarchs updates

There's been a rather long overdue update to the patriarchs page of the DAWE Surname DNA project to include a few more of the Devonshre DAWE families:
- the Buckland Monachorum tribe of Sampson and Joan (BLANCHARD) DAWE,
- an inter-related William and Johanna (HUNT) DAWE of Blackawton.
and
- the family of John & Grace (BEAL) DAWE of Pyworthy/Stoke Damerel.

All families still need direct male line DAWE/DAW representatives.

The pedigrees shown are by no means complete, just outlines showing some of the lines more likely to produce representatives.

14th: Upgrade promotion

Family Tree DNA have just announced an upgrade promotion, at an average of 25% off the cost of an upgrade.

6th: Devonshire DAW rep co-opted

Third kit ordered, we have a rep. from Isaac the miller's line at last, although more from other lines of descent would still be good as more than one rep. is needed to confirm a dna fingerprint.
The Patriarchs page has been updated as a result (to reduce some of the clutter now that a rep has been found for one line).

Also updated the DAWE wanted page with the names of a couple of Devonshire lineages that it would be good to get representatives for (trees to follow).

29th: Newfoundland Lineage updated

DAWE lineage pages updated to include the new project participant, and where he fits on the Newfoundland charts.
This included adding a new progenitor, William, one generation prior to Samuel, with some additional background info.

28th: Patriarchs updated

Patriarchs page updated to show the relationships between the newly dna matched participants.
As can be seen, we now have a good dna signature for the Newfoundland branch with two distinct, distant lines represented.
All that's needed now are several representatives of assorted Devonshire branches to provide a good match.

27th pt 2: Welcome to our 2nd participant

John's match has now come in from the cold and joined the project, so the Results page has been updated to reflect this.

Further details on where he fits into the Newfoundland tree will be updated when provided.

27th: First set of results in, and a match

Our first set of results (37 markers) are now in. They had been somewhat delayed as the lab had to use the B Sample to get a result.

There's a 25/25 match with another DAWE who has tested with Family Tree DNA, but isn't in our project (yet).

Results pages updated.

8th: New test discounts until end December

Until the end of December FamilyTreeDNA are offering Christmas specials on new tests ordered, so if anyone is interested in joining in, now is a very good time to do so.
The discounts only apply if you order via the surname project, so make sure you use the join project link (don't worry, you get to read some things first by clicking on that link and aren't automatically committing yourself), on the Daw(e) project pages
For useful comparisons with other lineages, the minimum test recommended is 37 markers, but 67 would be preferred.
Should you be considering this, and are the first to represent a line, or belong to line where a confirming test is required, there may be a subsidy available. Contact the Project Administrator first if you think this may apply.

Likewise, if you have any questions not answered by the FAQs available on the Daw(e) project pages or at FamilyTree DNA, please don't hesitate to contact the Project Administrator, as we'd love for you to be reassured that this is a completely harmless process, and you wont have police knocking on your door because of your dna, nor any medical conditions exposed. Those are completely different, much more elaborate tests.
